Samsung Galaxy S8: How does Maple Gold REALLY look?

Annoyed by the lack of information and pictures online when I was trying to choose the right colour for me... and no other colour except black, on most in-store displays... here's this post:

What does the S8 Maple Gold look like in real life?

Before you get excited (or disappointed), please remember that the availability of your colour choice also differs by country. I made a short list of those countries here.

Here's what Maple Gold looks like according to the Samsung company website.

I'll post some pictures and let you judge for yourself. Naturally, colours vary according to your computer resolution and my editing; this is just meant to give you a better idea. Please note I had to blur my serial code information, and I wasn't going to take the sticker off because I just unboxed it... I like to savour things behind the scenes!

Personal commentary after the pictures.

Next, I decided to do a comparison with the iPhone 6, to add context / frame of reference.

And with a cotton pad (white) international currency (U.S. quarter, Singapore $1 and $0.50, South Korea ₩1000)

As you can probably see for yourself, the Maple Gold looks much closer to a silver under different lighting. I would even say it's closer to a dark taupe, or light brown, and the metallic surface varies between the shades below, under normal conditions without direct light:

Personal commentary:

I'm pretty disappointed, actually. The iPhone gold definitely wins on this one, and has a more sophisticated sheen (definitely different materials). I was really hoping the gold would be brighter and warmer, like one of my favourite clutches from Japan:

I know Samsung branding is just different, but this colour is really understated. I'm very annoyed by the news reports I've been reading from (presumably) Western journalists, who described the gold as 'gaudy.' It's highly unlikely they even saw the phone in-person. Instead of typing every expletive originally in my thought process, I'm just gonna put this here:

If there are any non-Asian readers out there reading this, right now... in case you didn't know:
Gold is a popular colour in Asia because it represents wealth, prosperity, luxury, and prestige to many people in the Sino-sphere - it's practically a part of Chinese heritage. In recent times, silver has grown more popular. Especially with the younger set, and as globalization influences the East Asia region. They're both 'classy' colours today, and I just think that should be respected instead of mocked or jeered at.

Samsung Galaxy S8 2 Nano-Sim cards

I just unboxed my treasure (the Samsung Galaxy S8) a few hours ago, and thought I'd share two pictures from the Quick Start booklet it came with.

I heard from this Youtube channel that the phone would come with two Nano Sim cards OR an SD card, and I was super confused... I just wanted to know if this capability was region-specific or not, because it would be great for international travelers / residents like me.

Unfortunately, I can't confirm if it is region-specific, but, it seems like all the phones come with TWO slots, and those two slots can be fitted with:

A) a nano-Sim card

+

B) a second nano-Sim card
B) an external microSD card

You can only CHOOSE two, but the design is ingenious enough that it accommodates WHICHEVER option you choose.

It's better explained in the pictures below:

Hope this helps someone and thanks for reading~

Samsung Galaxy S8 Colours by Country

Hey guys,

I'm sure the information on the Samsung Galaxy S8's colours / colors according to country are available on someone's spreadsheet somewhere in the Samsung HQ. But I haven't been able to find much information about it online, so I thought I'd share this for anyone else who's an international traveler / resident like me.

As International Business Times has mentioned:
"Samsung has confirmed that only three color options will be available in the U.S.: Midnight Black, Arctic Silver, and Orchid Gray. While U.S. consumers will get to try out the new Orchid Gray option, they will miss out on the often popular gold option as well as Blue Coral. Samsung has not detailed its reasoning for this decision. However, the manufacturer has had an interesting history in releasing certain color options for its flagships in certain markets."

I don't have every country in the world listed (apologies), but I thought it might help those looking for a quick overview for countries with major cities. Because, despite what superhero movies tell us... The world is bigger than New York City!

All information was taken directly from Samsung's company website (according to country) and based on the current time of this post (29 June, 2017). Hope you found this helpful and feel free to check out my other post on the 2 nano SIM card slots that come with the phone.

The full range of colours the phone was released in, internationally:
Midnight Black, Orchid Grey, Arctic Silver, Coral Blue, Maple Gold

For anyone curious, I wasn't able to find out the colour options for China because my 普通话 sucks. If anyone knows, leave a comment and I'll check it out / update the post with credit.

Personal take:
I'm super bummed / fucking salty that Coral Blue wasn't available in my current country of residence... that's a big reason why I went on a search to find out where I could get it, and the scant information I saw was pathetic, leading to this post. It seems like Blue's only available in countries where a significant amount of people lead colourful lives / belong to a colourful culture Q.Q Stereotypes and shit!

My mom agreed it was a pretty big oversight on Samsung to make a phone that costs so much (at least USD$700 in most markets) but not allow consumers to choose which colour they want. I mean, I'm not a supporter of Apple, but in this case, even Apple wins in allowing their customers to choose what colour they want, right?

Consumer market research and costs be damned for just a second; it feels UNFAIR. If Samsung had offered an alternative option, like paying a little more to get a color of choice generally unavailable in your country... I'm sure I wouldn't be the only customer paying for that.
Don't underestimate the power of colour (especially for a creative person)... I paid an extra $100 to get my Seagate drive in Rose Gold... Oops lol.

Never See Any Mermaids?

If you have problems seeing mermaids in game and you have any NRAAS mods installed, this may help you:

1) As someone on the Sims 3 forums mentioned, something about Nraas's mods conflict with the NPC mermaids and give them jobs or whatever, so you - almost - never see them.

2) There is a bug in the game with / without the mods, that can cause the NPC mermaids to only appear in human form. i.e. Maya Ocean, Salty Seaworth, even when swimming, you just see their legs.

HOW TO SUMMON MERMAIDS / BEFRIEND MERMAIDS:
1. Download MasterController if you haven't already
2. In game, click your Sim
3. Nraas >> MasterController >> Intermediate >> Long Term Relationship: by Category

4. Scroll down to "Occult Type"

5. Select Mermaid and a list of all the Mermaids in your town will show up. You can select ANY one of them, and select the relationship you want with them:

(Please note the mermaids you see in this list include my own custom made mermaids. It's very likely you'll only 5 - 6 NPC mermaids in your list if you just started playing. The first one should be Azul, Mia)

6. I selected "Good Friend" and then saw Mia appear in the Friendship panel.
Once you signal mermaid - and you can signal them from anywhere, indoors at home or at the beach... they will appear like a normal guest:

And that's how you befriend a mermaid!
Of course this is definitely cheating and an "unnatural" way to befriend a Sim, but you can guarantee results! You can actually use this method on any Sim, not just Mermaids, so you could play around with the controls... you know, like when Love Potions fail - or something. ;)

I only tried this method after hours of unsuccessful play time, and I couldn't find a way to reassign merchants that were mermaids (as someone else claimed on the forums) because I didn't even know WHO was a mermaid to begin with! I hope this guide helped you, even though it's very late, there just might be other players late to the expansions like me.

Sims 3 Architecture Career Help

I used Twinbrook for the architecture career in Sims 3, but you're welcome to use any other town.

I've compiled tips that worked for me playing:

Sims 3 base game + Sims 3 Ambitions + Sims 3 Generations
  • 6 Tips
  • Preferable Traits
  • Links to more architecture advice
Tips

1. Take a photo of your client
You don't need the Photography skill (that comes with World Adventures).

Your client is rarely home when you do renovations. It doesn't matter how far along renovations you are, you could have put one chair down for the living room makeover, and still summon him/her home by exiting the house (click Live Mode) and clicking "Tell Client Renovation is complete".

When the client arrives on the lot (and before he/she reaches the front door) cancel the command.

It helps to engage in a compliment or some short conversation before taking the picture via:

Click your Sim / Cell Phone / Take Photo

Even if your client doesn't fit the full frame, and all you get is one eye, IT WORKS.

Your client will love you. Now click "Continue Renovation" to add that picture on the wall.
And turn it in.

2. Procrastination is good.

Don't try to complete a project/job last minute. Here's why:
Your client takes 30 minutes - 1.5 hours Sim time (depends on residence location) to return home.

Inspection takes another 15-20 Sim minutes, even more if your upgrade was on a second floor or anywhere that wasn't near the lobby. Factor in the time it takes for your client to shuffle around slowly, and you need 1-2 hours Sim time as a window/margin.

That means, even though you get off work at 6pm, it's best to call the client no later than 4pm.

If you're past that time, 3 things happen:
  • Client comes back, but the job/project is bugged. You don't get any evaluation, nor experience.
  • The game recognizes you've "completed" the job (on the checklist), so you can't even go back the next day to continue where you left off. It's finished, and there won't be a record of what you did even though you know it and your client knows it because he/she is lazing on the brand new chair you bought in front of their stupid pool... yeah
  • You've just pissed yourself off again for wasting time on a no good bugger.
There are many people who just try out things for fun, well, most people reading this are probably here because they actually like designing and enjoy expressing their artistic abilities.
3. Handcrafted works count even if your Sim didn't make them.
You could make a large family full of Artistic and Savvy Sculptor Sims, and their work will still count towards the "I love all the handcrafted finishes you did" in evaluation.

4. 'Tell Client Renovation is Complete' has higher priority over all other tasks.
This is in sync with tip #1, but this anecdote proves just how high that priority is:

I once had a pregnant Sim client go into labour RIGHT when she arrived home for the evaluation. I decided to test the evaluation option anyway. The pregnant Sim promptly marched over with me to the house and seemed to forget the incoming baby! Wonderful!

Immediately after she finished her review - which was overwhelmingly positive - I escorted her to the hospital.

If she had given a negative review, I would have left her crying on the spot... but not before detonating one of her pillows or better yet, the new crib installed.

(I've done that before)

Made possible with the Inventing skill.

5. Spouses' traits count too
Good example:
Eva Drudge is a bookworm, which means adding bookshelves scored a higher evaluation score than if I just focused on her husband ... the doctor, who has NO relevant traits for interior design.

Bad example:
Thomas Castor flew into a rage when I left $1 in the remaining budget.
He screamed that Beverly Castor was a snob and think they couldn't afford the renovation.
In the future, leave $0 if possible.

Unless your client is Frugal, by all means, burn through the money.

6. Rearrange items in your family inventory.
Budget problems: People advised deleting several things or an entire floor.
While this works well, I found something even more effective. Some might call it cheating.

I discovered it while I was deciding which art piece to place.

Taking things in and out of your FAMILY inventory adds to the funds:

It also works when you have TWO of the same item and they group up, for some reason, the game recognizes this two objects grouping as "selling" one item, and the money goes to client budget.
You can rearrange objects in your inventory as many times as you want, to get as much money as you want in the client's Budget Remaining.

This is great because you can always buy high quality objects even if your client is stingy like Phoenix Prudence.

However, it can cause some difficulty in getting it down to $0, because most Sim objects start at $3 or $9 or $10 Sim dollars.

So I'd advise putting in a few small objects that sell for $1 (I use a CC object for this one, haven't found a default item that works yet), $30-$50 (in-game roses from another sim), and $5000 (2 SimLife VR goggles) because it's the most lightweight thing that can add so much in a small space (everything else that costs around that price is big or requires like 30 grid squares... not possible in a swamp).

I realized that not everybody plays with cheats on like me.

If you're hesitant to use motherlode ($50 000 immediately), you could always use your art work. Even your paintings comes up as "sold" even though you are simply rearranging it in the inventory.

Sculptures are the fail-safe though, grouping two or more of the same type always count as sold.

Reference of how much you can sell for:

Brilliant painting: $800 - 2000
Great sculpture: $1500
Good architecture sketch: $350 - 500

I know the prices differ for everybody, but this should give you an idea of what's the maximum to expect. To cover your costs.

Traits
Few people mentioned Traits and Lifetime Rewards that the architect needs.

1. Perceptive
REALLY KEY AND VALUABLE. If you can't choose the trait, buy the Observant Lifetime Reward as soon as possible. Just like in real life, sometimes it doesn't matter how amazing and artistic your Sim is, if you don't choose items according to the client's traits, you will get a bad evaluation.

Even though I play with cheats, I found this route much better than pausing game to load the client's household and find out traits. Besides, when I logged back into my house, the job/project mysteriously disappeared, as if the game KNEW I was cheating (shock).

Reading Sim wikia also helps if you are designing for a pre-made family, because the database has all their traits listed online. This thread is also incredibly helpful for Twinbrook residents.

Sometimes you just have clients who aren't in the database, because they're townies. It's much faster to get the Observant lifetime reward and pick traits up within a few Sim minutes of the first meeting.

2. Artistic/Savvy Sculptor
For all your art pieces that can be crafted and placed in the client's home. Even if the client hates art, you could sculpt a chair or a sink and it would still count towards "handcrafted touches."

Dax Van Gould

Dax Van Gould, born to Charlotte and Tristan Van Gould of Moonlight Falls. Inheriting a lineage of nobility from France, and the historical wealth of the Van Gould dynasty, Dax belongs to the upper echelon of Western society. His stunning good looks are a mirror of Noctis (FF-13X) and one can almost wonder, in the unfairness of his prestige, if Dax was simply an emperor reincarnated.

Thankfully, Dax doesn't possess the haughty air that comes with a windfall of wealth. He's a Friendly Sim, reaching out to those around him, no matter their income, age, or how much make up is caked on their face. His fashion style still resembles Noctis', but it's a greater reflection of the Japanese anime and manga that he adores.

Dax was born a Genius, as his parents were. An intellectual at heart, he loves a Deep Conversation with other thoughtful Sims, be it arguing Falafel VS Dimsum, or Pythagoras' Theorem.

He might be popular with Sims, but he's not a player (lol). Only the sands of time will tell his true love.
